Neurology Primer: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – Assessment and Treatment Strategies

Neurology Primer: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Assessment and Treatment Strategies

Carrick Institute is proud to announce our brand new, 1-day Neurology Primer course – Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: Assessment and Treatment Strategies with Dr. Helena Esmonde.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is the most common cause of vertigo in adults, resulting in over 1.5 million visits to the ED in the US each year. With proper assessment and maneuvers, the vast majority of cases can be effectively treated, alleviating patients of debilitating symptoms and decreasing their risk of falls at the same time. Grow your clinical practice and expand your skills to confidently treat this dizzy population!

Learn strategies to assess BPPV including the use of infrared video goggles to better visualize eye movements, maneuvers designed to treat BPPV effectively, ways to differentiate BPPV from other vestibular conditions, and clinical reasoning and decision-making skills necessary for quality care for patients with BPPV.

What you will Learn:

  1. Understand basic vestibular anatomy as well as what BPPV is, why it occurs, and how to differentiate it from other vestibular conditions
  2. Practice performing Dix-Hallpike, side lying, and roll tests when assessing for BPPV
  3. Improve ability to interpret eye movements visualized via infrared video goggles to assist in the diagnosis of BPPV
  4. Recognize the difference between canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis as different variants of BPPV
  5. Perform repositioning maneuvers for treatment of posterior, anterior, and horizontal canal BPPV
  6. Distinguish patient diagnoses where special considerations for assessment and treatment may be warranted, including youth, elderly, c-spine precautions, and patients with vascular disease
  7. Discuss patient cases regarding BPPV assessment and treatment to support clinical reasoning and decision-making for quality patient care

Who is this Class for?

Licensed medical professionals whose scope of practice encompasses care of patients with BPPV, including audiologists, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, chiropractors, physicians, and physician assistants.

*It is recommended that practitioners taking this course have a basic understanding of vestibuar anatomy and phsyiology.
